Armstrong signs for Middlesbrough for £1.6m.


Middlesbrough today completed the signing of Stockport County striker Alun Armstrong for £1.6 million.

The 23-year-old, who had beeen linked with a move into the Premiership with Southampton last week, agreed a four-and-a-half year contract with Bryan Robson and is expected to make his debut against Sunderland next weekend.

The former Newcastle United player was introduced to the Middlesbrough fans during the interval of the home game with Bradford City.

Robson said:
"He has always impressed me as a striker with talent.
"Alan is quick, skillful and has a very good goalscoring record."

Armstrong returns to his native North-East after leaving boyhood idols Newcastle for Lancashire in the summer of 1994. At Edgeley Park he acquired several acolades, including the club's top scorer award in season 1994/95 and 1995/96.
